An 11-year-old girl, who attempted to hide under her mother’s vehicle during a hijacking, was killed when she was run over by the suspects fleeing in the vehicle.
KZN police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said they were investigating a case of murder and hijacking.
He said from information gathered thus far, the child, her sibling, mother and grandmother had gone to a fast-food outlet on Main Road, Malvern, on Wednesday September 11, when the incident took place at about 8.30pm.
“It is alleged that the complainant went to the fast food outlet with her two teenage children- a girl and boy and her mum. She parked and got off with her mum whilst the children remained in the vehicle. While standing at the entrance of the fast-food outlet, she saw a silver coloured vehicle with bright lights drive into the parking lot. Four armed men got off and one of them, armed with a rifle stood at the suspect’s car while the three approached the complainant at the entrance and demanded the keys,” said Constable Ngcobo.
He said the 11-year-old daughter saw what was happening, got off the vehicle and hid under the vehicle while the other child ran away.
“The suspects managed to get the keys, jumped into the vehicle and while driving away, ran over the child hiding underneath the vehicle. The child was rushed to hospital in a serious condition but did not make it through the night,” said Constable Ngcobo.
The suspects made away in the family’s white Fortuner that was later recovered in Chesterville.
