A candlelight vigil was held for former Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan at the 1860 Heritage Centre in the Durban CBD on Wednesday evening.
Mr Gordhan was admitted to hospital on Monday night with family spokesman Adrian Lackay not providing much information besides saying that he was “receiving the best medical care”.
“The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Further updates on his condition will be provided,” read the statement.
On Wednesday evening, political stalwarts such as Ela Gandhi, among others, gathered in prayer for Mr Gordhan.
Lighting a candle for Mr Gordhan was Cynthia Stimpel, the SAA whistleblower, who said she had been inspired by Mr Gordhan’s life.
On Thursday, Mr Lackay also rubbished claims and fake social media reports that Mr Gordhan had died.
Mr Gordhan’s daughter, Anisha, in a WhatsApp group called “Prayer for Pravin Gordhan”, reacted to the messages of his death saying: “Pravin has not passed away”.
“This should be confirmed with family first. Please can this dangerous fake news stop!” Anisha posted in the WhatsApp group in response to the message of his death.
The ANC had earlier released a statement wishing Mr Gordhan a speedy recovery.
“The ANC would like to extend its heartfelt wishes for a swift and complete recovery to former ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member and veteran of our movement, Comrade Pravin Gordhan. During this time of health challenges, our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and we are confident that the strength and determination he possesses will see him through this period. We look forward to his full recovery to health and continued contribution to our movement and service to the country,” read the statement.
