The eThekwini Municipality emergency services are currently assessing the impact that the bad weather has had on parts of the city.
No fatalities have been reported to date. The municipality’s emergency services are monitoring the city and will provide assistance to affected areas as the inclement weather continues.
Cato Crest and Clairwood are reported to have been affected by the raging storms with a few incidents reported, said eThekwini Municipality communications officer, Gugu Sisilana.
“In the Cato Crest area, around seven informal structures were affected with three totally destroyed. This was a result of trees falling on the structures, which led to some injuries. The injured residents were taken to hospital for treatment. A team from Disaster Management was on site assessing the situation,” said Ms Sisilana.
Meanwhile, around 50 structures in Clairwood have been damaged.
No injuries or fatalities were registered, however, some homes were flooded.
Disaster Management together with a team from Water and Sanitation are assessing the situation to determine the extent of the damage. The municipality’s emergency services are also on stand-by, said Ms Sisilana.
“The SA Weather Service has indicated that the Level 6 warning remains in effect. Light rainfall is forecast across the eThekwini Municipality, with higher intensities expected in the north and west regions. Given the rainfall experienced over the past 24 hours, there is an increased risk of localised flooding in vulnerable areas within the municipality,” said Ms Sisilana.
The Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) team will continue to monitor forecasts, which remain subject to change. They will continue to provide updates accordingly. The public is urged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when driving. People can report emergencies on 031 361 0000.
