The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department has officially begun transitioning to a cashless payment system at motor licensing centres, a move aimed at curbing cash-in-transit robberies and enhancing financial security.
The shift was formally announced in a circular from the Department of Transport, confirming that motor licensing and registration authorities will no longer accept cash payments.
Some licensing centres in the province have already implemented the card-only payment system.
KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said adopting a cashless system would enhance financial transparency and security while reducing crime risks. “This system will ensure a direct payment trail that benefits both municipalities and the provincial treasury in the long run.”
Mr Duma highlighted the safety advantages of digital payments, noting that eliminating the need to carry cash would lower residents’ exposure to crime. He also pointed to global technological advancements saying there was a need for South Africa to keep pace.
“The rapid growth of IT and technology globally shows us that convenience is key,” Mr Duma said. “As a country, we are moving towards the Fifth Industrial Revolution, and the Department of Transport is embracing this shift, particularly as a technical department dealing with engineering and other critical functions.”
