Thirty tiny heroes saved an elderly woman on Tuesday afternoon, April 9, when they scared off a masked intruder in Redcliffe, north of Durban.
The crèche pupils noticed something was amiss when they saw a masked man trying to gain entry into the woman’s home.
Spokesperson for the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), Prem Balram said the quick-thinking children used all their might to scream as loud as they could and alerted the crèche caregivers.
“The children were playing outside when they noticed the masked man. They were very smart and knew immediately that the man was up to no good. He was wearing a black mask and was attempting to gain entry into the home of an elderly woman. The children noticed the man crawling out of a dense bush at approximately 4.02pm. Their screams alerted caregivers on the property who ran out and found the man approaching a home. An adult ran indoors to use the telephone to call Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), while the children continued to scream at the perpetrator. He eventually fled on foot and failed to gain entry into the target home,” said Mr Balram
Reaction officers searched the dense bush for the suspect. No arrests were made and the man was not identified. It could not be confirmed if the suspect was armed, said Mr Balram.
