A young Chatsworth man was tragically shot and killed in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after bravely trying to protect his mother and sister during a violent home invasion in Havenside.
According to reports, five armed suspects gained entry to the property through the rear, which borders Bulbul Drive, at approximately 5am.
The suspects reportedly accosted the female homeowner and her daughter as they stepped outside to hang washing on the line. The armed men then forced the women back into the house and demanded valuables.
“The homeowner's son and husband were alerted by the commotion from the upstairs level of the double-storey home. When they came downstairs, they confronted the suspects in an attempt to defend their family,” said the report.
The suspects opened fire during the confrontation resulting in the 20-year-old son being shot multiple times and rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries due to the severity of the wounds.
Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics and Emergency Services, confirmed that paramedics were called to the scene following reports of a shooting during an attempted home invasion.
“One male victim had been rushed privately to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, he died en route due to injuries affecting vital organs,” said Mr Jamieson.
The victim’s parents were severely traumatised by the incident. They were treated at the scene and later transported to hospital for further care.
Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said investigations into the matter were ongoing.
