The highly anticipated Oceans 8 Charity Swim returns in 2025, bringing with it the Interschools 1 Mile Challenge.
Scheduled for Saturday June 14 and Sunday June 15 at Vetch’s Beach, Durban Undersea Club, this open-water event invites schools to take part in a competition that blends athleticism, charity, and school spirit.
The event is a unique opportunity for pupils to challenge themselves in open-water swimming while making a difference in their communities. “Swimming helps build mental fitness,” said event spokesperson, Nicci Carvalho.
“The Oceans 8 Challenge offers South African schoolchildren a healthy outlet to channel their energy, boost their confidence, and contribute to something greater than themselves. It’s an ideal balance to the stress of academic demands.”
Founded in 2023, Oceans 8 Charity Swim is a fundraising initiative established by charities to support various causes, including conservation, education, and childcare. To date, the event has raised over R1,7 million for 23 charitable organisations, with ambitions to increase support for non-profits across KwaZulu-Natal each year.
The Interschools 1 Mile Challenge allows schools to compete not only in the water but also in philanthropy. Participants can earn community service hours while vying for two prestigious trophies:
In 2024, Treverton School dominated both categories, with Reddam House Umhlanga and Steyn City School also making an impact. The question remains: which school will take the top spots in 2025?
Pupils, teachers, family members and friends representing a school can enter on June 14 and 15 at Vetch’s Beach, Durban Undersea Club. Entry fee is R200 per swimmer (includes cap, medal, and goodie bag) plus a minimum of R800 raised for charity.
Visit www.oceans8swim.co.za for more information on how to enter.
Charities supported by the event are the Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust, National Sea Rescue Institute, Project Rhino and Singakwenza Early Childhood Education for the 6 and 8 Mile events.
Crow, Game Rangers’ Association of South Africa, IPSS Search and Rescue, Makabongwe Pre-School, Made for More, Nazareth House in Berea, Umduduzi – Hospice Care for Children, Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home, Rise Against Hunger Africa and Sport for Lives are supported by the 1 and 4 Mile events.
