The first-ever KwaZulu World Carnival is set to take place on Africa Day, Saturday May 25 in Durban.

Billed as an “authentic and vibrant parade”, the event is sponsored by Durban Tourism and SAFA eThekwini and will celebrate all things KZN including the dance, food, culture and sounds.

“This event will be a celebration of the cultures and traditions that make KwaZulu such a diverse and vibrant place. Everyone is encouraged to come (for free) in traditional dress or costumes that represent their heritage,’ said carnival chairman Dr Bandile Mkhize.

He said the goal was to grow the KwaZulu World Carnival to attract troupes from the entire world.

“We want to be like Rio in Brazil, as carnivals are known to be their tourist attractions. Ours is different as it will surely give all attendees the authentic Zulu experience,” said Dr Mkhize.

The carnival will include a parade (that will take place from noon until 2pm) from the Workshop to Hoy Park. People are invited to wear their traditional garments and line up the street to enjoy the different performances from different countries.
