A helicopter search has been activated to assist in a recovery operation along the Umzumbe Beach in Hibberdene to aid in the search for 13-year-old Armaan Khan, who was swept out to sea on Saturday.

Armaan’s uncle, Asif Khan, 36, a metro police officer based in South Durban, tragically drowned while attempting to save him. His body was recovered shortly after the incident.

According to Armaan’s father, Saleem Adam, the teenager and five others were in the water when a strong rip current pulled them out to sea. Despite frantic rescue efforts, including attempts by surfers, Armaan disappeared beneath the waves.

“Ten of our family members went to the beach that day. Around 12:20pm, Armaan was caught in the current. I saw it happen but was too far away to help,” said Adam. “His uncle, Asif, tried to rescue him, but he also got into difficulty. We managed to pull Asif out and attempted resuscitation, but he didn’t make it. Surfers tried to reach Armaan, but they lost sight of him,” Adam has been reported as saying.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the Hibberdene Community Policing Forum immediately launched a search operation, but their efforts were hampered by another drowning incident at San Lameer. Despite multiple searches throughout the weekend, Armaan’s body has yet to be recovered.

Adam said they have been searching tirelessly together with the police, NSRI crews, and volunteers who have used their boats and drones. He has asked for as many people as possible to join in the search.

Armaan was a promising young cricketer, playing for the Dolphins Cricket Club, and had just begun his first year at Kharwastan Secondary School.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon confirmed that a 40-year-old family member had also gotten into trouble in the water and had been transported to hospital.

“The police divers continue their search, and an inquest docket has been opened. Our thoughts and prayers are with Armaan’s family during this heartbreaking time,” said Mr Lambinon. “We commend local community members who prevented more family members from entering the water, avoiding further tragedy.”

Metro police spokesperson Colonel Booysie Zungu described Asif Khan as a hero. “We have lost a dedicated officer who died trying to save his nephew. His colleagues are devastated. We send our condolences to his family, friends, and fellow officers.”

Prem Balram from Reaction Unit South Africa said they were also assisting in the search by launching their helicopter over the vicinity of where Armaan is believed to have drowned.
