Following their incredible debut run in the FNB Varsity Shield in 2024, the IIE’s Varsity College rugby side, FNB Varsity College Comets are well into their preparations for the 2025 campaign starting on February 14.
Last year the Comets finished the competition as runners-up in their first appearance, which was as newcomers to the Varsity Shield. In 2025 it will be a different prospect for coach, Jeremy McLaren and his team who have been preparing hard for the tournament.
“We had a very good training camp locally at Varsity College and covered a lot from an on-the-field and off-the-field perspective,” McLaren said. “It was a very good time together and I think that we achieved quite a lot over the few days. I’m pleased with the players so far.”
The Comets squad will have a few new faces for the 2025 campaign, and despite these changes Mr McLaren is confident that his squad will be highly competitive. He said the more senior players have helped the newer players get accustomed to their structures and plans.
After their dynamic showing last season the Comets will be under pressure to replicate their performance in 2025. The coach said they will not be going into the season as the unknown factor.
“The Comets have arguably the most difficult start to the competition this season with their first two matches against FNB Madibaz and FNB UWC. If the team can get through these two matches with some positive results then that sets them up well for the rest of the competition. If we start well in the tournament, then we are on that pathway potentially towards a play-off or promotion to the Varsity Cup,” said McLaren.
With the season a few weeks away, McLaren is hopeful that his team will get in some competitive action to warm up. He said they are almost certain they we will face Wits in a warm-up match before the Varsity Shield starts.
The Varsity Comets begin their 2025 FNB Varsity Shield campaign against FNB Madibaz at Varsity College, Durban North, on February 14.
