In a display of skill and teamwork, St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls (D.S.G.) secured their title once again at the Spar KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge (Highway Regional), that was held on Sunday at the Westville Girls’ High School.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the team showcased their dominance in the Highway Regional, marking another successful defence of their championship.
The tournament, comprising a total of 15 games throughout the day, saw St Mary’s leading the scoreboard.
The team, undeterred by the wet weather, won all five of their round-robin matches, amassing a total of 20 points.
Curro Hillcrest, despite their valiant effort, finished in the runner-up position with a tally of 10 points, the same as Hillcrest High School, but advanced to the final based on a superior goal difference.
The final match was a repeat showdown between St Mary’s and Curro Hillcrest, echoing their earlier encounter in the day.
St Mary’s team members Jamie Da Silva, Elizabeth Anderson, and Jenna-Leigh Freese were the stars of the show, each scoring a goal to seal a 3-0 victory for their team.
The goals were the result of strategic plays and teamwork, showcasing the team’s offensive strength.
Da Silva’s remarkable skill was evident nearly 12 minutes into the game when she scored the opening goal. Anderson then followed up with a second goal after capitalizing on a quick pass, and Freese secured the victory with a cleverly placed shot in the final minute of the game.
This victory not only reaffirms St Mary’s dominance in the regional challenge but also secures their spot in the Grand Finals scheduled to be held on their home ground in July.
The team aims to add to their impressive record at the Grand Finals, where they have previously won the overall trophy five times.
St Mary’s D.S.G. will join other regional champions, including Durban Girls’ College, The Wykeham
Collegiate, St John’s D.S.G., and Our Lady of Fatima, in what promises to be a highly competitive Grand Finals.
In another highlight of the day, Enza Magubane from Westville Girls’ High was honoured with the Umpire of the Day award, recognizing her exceptional control and contribution to the game.
The Spar KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge will take a brief hiatus over Easter, resuming in April with New Forest hosting the first tournament of the month.
The next regional event set for April 6 at the 3 Schools Trust for the Durban South Regional.
