Kimberley’s own Abel Mokwena has officially arrived on the professional cricket scene, making his debut for the Northern Cape Heat – a moment that marks the realisation of a lifelong dream.
Mokwena’s journey began in the nets and fields of Newton Primary School, where his raw talent first emerged. Now, years later, he stands as a proud representative of his home province, proving that dedication and perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
At just 14, he left home to attend Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town, where his game flourished. His performances earned him a spot in Western Province’s age-group teams, and after matriculating in 2022, he continued his cricketing journey at UJ in Johannesburg.
But the pull of home was strong. Choosing to return to Kimberley proved to be a game-changing decision, leading to standout performances in club cricket – two centuries and a half-century in just five matches – which ultimately opened the door to his Heat debut.
Making his professional bow was a surreal moment for Mokwena, made even more special by the presence of those who had shaped his career.
“It was amazing to debut in front of my family, friends, and even my childhood coaches. Seeing their work pay off – from coaching me as a kid to now making my List A debut – was truly special,” he said.
While chasing cricketing glory, Mokwena is also pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Sol Plaatje University, striking a delicate balance between academics and sport.
“I set aside time daily for my studies, though traveling makes it tough. Having my laptop at the field helps, especially when exams are near,” he shared.
“My aim is to help NC Heat finish top of the log in the CSA Division 2 50-over competition and push for promotion next season. Personally, I want to establish myself as a key performer in the squad and make consistent contributions.”
To young cricketers with big dreams, he offers simple but powerful advice:
“Never give up. Every cricketer’s journey is different. Stay focused, work hard, and grab every opportunity.”
With talent, determination, and an unwavering passion for the game, Abel Mokwena is a rising star in South African cricket.
