The eThekwini municipality is in the process of repairing a significant underground water pipe burst that caused a sinkhole on Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street in Durban’s CBD over the weekend.
Gugu Sisilana, the municipality’s spokesperson, said that the Water and Sanitation Department worked tirelessly through the night to isolate, investigate, and rectify the issue.
“We’re currently backfilling the damaged road, and our roads department will soon begin tarring the affected area,” Ms Sisilana said.
She confirmed that the extensive repair work was on track to be completed soonest, minimising disruptions to the city’s daily operations.
To ensure public safety and facilitate ongoing repairs, specific sections of the affected area remain temporarily closed. These include the intersection of Dr Yusuf Dadoo and Bertha Mkhize streets, as well as the segment of David Webster Street leading toward the harbour.
“Residents and commuters are urged to exercise caution and follow traffic diversions until normalcy is restored in the affected areas,” said Ms Sisilana.
