KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has issued a warning to residents as the province prepares for another wave of torrential rains.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast disruptive rainfall over coastal areas including the eThekwini Metro, Ugu, uMkhanyakude, Ilembe, King Cetshwayo Districts, starting Monday.
Cogta MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, urged residents to stay informed and exercise caution, especially when travelling.
“Although the warning suggests the impact may be concentrated in low-lying areas, we strongly advise residents to monitor weather updates before embarking on long journeys,” said Mr Buthelezi.
The MEC assured the public that disaster management teams are ready to respond. Municipalities have also been instructed to prepare shelters, such as community halls, for any residents displaced by the heavy rains.
“Disaster teams will remain on standby, particularly in coastal regions. Residents should avoid low-lying areas that are vulnerable to flooding,” Mr Buthelezi added. Major routes will be continuously monitored by emergency teams to ensure the safety of travellers during the storms.
As KwaZulu-Natal braces for more disruptive weather, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety.
