Tyreece Iyer, a Bachelor of Law student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), walked away with the prestigious GradStar Award at a ceremony held in Johannesburg earlier this month. He has been named as one of the Top 100 most employable university students across South Africa.
GradStar is a mentorship programme that annually recognises top students who display leadership qualities and readiness for the workplace.
Mr Iyer underwent a meticulous judging process before being selected over thousands of hopefuls around the country.
The programme acknowledges the top 100 university students and top 10 finest graduates nationwide, with students and graduates being assessed on their leadership qualities and preparedness for the professional workplace.
The selection process involves a rigorous four-phase judging process, culminating in a series of workshops facilitated by potential employers. The top 100 students are then paired with successful business mentors, providing them with guidance and networking opportunities, added Mr Iyer.
“It’s an honour not only to be part of the Top 100, but to represent my university, UKZN. The Gradstar awards was a great achievement for me, I had the privilege to acquire an extensive amount of knowledge from like-minded individuals. I got the chance to meet the CEO of the Gautrain Management Agency, Mr Tshepo Kgobe; global award-winning senior civil engineer and project manager, Ms Innocentia Mahlangu as well as many other accomplished professionals,” Mr Iyer said.
He added that he acquired a lot of insight from the programme as it has given him a glimpse of how competitive the working world is.
