University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) alma mater, Nokubonga Mkhalipi, has a passion for optometry.
She recently opened the first community-focused optometry practice in Jozini.
This was facilitated by the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation’s Vula Amehlo graduate development programme and supported by the University’s Optometry discipline and the UKZN Foundation.
The programme empowers young optometrists to establish independent eye care practices in under-served rural areas, addressing South Africa’s vision care gap while creating economic opportunities.
“This opportunity marks a turning point in my career and allows me to provide high-quality, affordable eye care to people who have long been without access,” Ms Mkhalipi said.
The Vula Amehlo programme, meaning “open your eyes”, combines entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and funding to enable graduates to establish fully equipped optical practices in rural areas. Each practice, valued at R2 million, includes prefabricated units, equipment, an initial supply of spectacles, and ongoing business and clinical support.
“The project is more than just a healthcare solution, it’s a rural economic development programme,” said Lameez Eksteen, country manager for the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation in South Africa. “By empowering graduates like Nokubonga to run their own businesses, we are creating sustainable access to vision care while supporting local economies. Jozini residents now can receive high-quality eye care right in their community.”
Ms Mkhalipi’s practice will provide various vision care services, with glasses available for R500 per pair, an affordable option for many rural residents. She also plans to use the platform to educate her community about the importance of eye health and preventive care.
Growing up, Ms Mkhalipi witnessed the devastating effects of uncorrected poor vision on people in her community, sparking her passion for optometry.
“I’ve seen how poor vision hinders people’s ability to work, learn, and live independently. This practice allows me to directly address those challenges while contributing to the overall well-being of the community,” she said. “For me, this venture represents a significant professional milestone. This practice offers me the chance to refine my clinical expertise, expand my diagnostic skills, and deliver high-quality care in resource-limited environments. It aligns with my values of accessibility and community-focused healthcare.”
She also credited UKZN for equipping her with the skills and values needed to excel. She said UKZN’s comprehensive optometry programme not only built her clinical expertise but also fostered her commitment to community-oriented healthcare. She said she was deeply grateful to the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and the UKZN Foundation for their support.
