Two suspects, wanted for the murder of a Durban policeman, Sergeant Riyadh Adams, were killed in a pre-dawn raid in KwaMashu.
A multi-task team including police and private security led to the arrest of a suspect outside the Zimbali Estate in Ballito – who then led the police to another suspect in KwaMashu, wanted in connection with the murder.
Shaheen Suleman from Magma Security and Investigations said as team members approached the building where the second suspect was hiding, he opened fire on the police.
“A member was struck on his chest and fell to the ground. Fortunately the bulletproof vest stopped the projectile. The suspect continued to open fire, fatally wounding the first suspect. Members returned fire fatally wounding the second suspect,” said Mr Suleman.
He said the team also recovered a 9mm pistol that had its serial number filed off.
Sergeant Adams, who was off-duty on November 19, responded to reports of two jewellery heists at the Pavilion shopping centre when he was shot by fleeing suspects. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital a short while later.
