Two people were killed in a collision between a bakkie and a bus in the heart of Durban’s CBD.
The crash occurred just before midnight at the intersection of Stanger Street and Somtseu Road.
Emergency services described the scene as one of “utter carnage”.
Garrith Jamieson, from ALS Paramedics, reported that both vehicles collided at the junction and were propelled off the roadway, eventually coming to rest on the pavement.
“Upon arrival, paramedics encountered multiple casualties and immediately requested additional resources, including support from the eThekwini Fire Department,” said Mr Jamieson.
“Approximately 20 passengers from the bus sustained various injuries. After being stabilized on the scene, they were transported to several Durban hospitals for further medical care.
“Tragically, two occupants of the bakkie—a man and a woman, both believed to be in their thirties—sustained fatal injuries. Despite the paramedics’ best efforts, they were declared deceased at the scene,” said Mr Jamieson.
The exact circumstances leading to the collision are still unclear. Both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police were on the scene and have launched an investigation.
As KwaZulu-Natal faces wet weather conditions this week, Mr Jamieson urged motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads. “Ensure your vehicles are roadworthy, leave for your destination earlier, and reduce your speed to stay safe,” he advised.
