On Wednesday January 10 a truck driver lost control of his vehicle, crashing through a steel fence and driving straight into a block of flats, injuring one person in Ridgeview, Cato Manor, Durban.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics spokesman, Garrith Jamieson, said the truck had been carrying stones and that ALS had responded after receiving a call around 7.30am.
“Paramedics arrived on scene to find chaos as a single truck had somehow lost control negotiating a corner and crashed through a fence and into a block of flats,” he said.
“Paramedics found the driver severely entrapped in the wreckage and immediately the Durban Fire Department and the Netcare911 Rescue Unit were called to assist.
“Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilise the man together with EMRS (Emergency Medical Response) Paramedics as the rescue continued. After approximately an hour later, the patient was cut free from the wreckage using Jaws of Life. He sustained serious injuries and was carefully removed from the truck before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that he required,” said Mr Jamieson.
One occupant inside the flats at the time had sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital by ALS Paramedics, Mr Jamieson said. He added that at this stage, the events leading up to the crash are unknown. The South African Police Service (SAPS) were on scene and will be investigating further.
