On Friday September 1 more than 1000 families were given the title deeds to their homes after having painstakingly waited to become the rightful owners of their properties.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Sipho “KK” Nkosi and eThekwini Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda officiated over the handover ceremony held at Emasosheni Sportsground, Cornubia Ward 102, Durban.
The title deed handover comes at the time KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements Department is currently rolling out its accelerated Title-Deed Restoration Programme (TRP) as part of MEC Nkosi’s priorities of his first 100 days in office since May 23.
eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, said through the MEC’s accelerated TRP campaign, the department hopes to speed up the opening of the formal property market in areas like Cornubia and other townships in the greater eThekwini Municipality.
Mr Nkosi and Mr Kaunda handed over the title-deeds for properties and housing stock built before April 1994 and after the advent of the democratic dispensation in April 1994.
“Some of the pre-1994 housing stock title deeds handed over on Friday to eligible beneficiaries are for areas like Austerville houses, Austerville Flats, Shallcross houses and Shallcross Flats, Crossmoor in Chatsworth, Bonela and Bristow Crescent in Mayville as well as Chesterville Township,” said Ms Sisilana.
“The MEC and mayor will also hand over post-1994 title deeds for Kingsburgh West, Parkgate, Cornubia, Tshelimnyama, St Wendolins, KwaMashu C-Section, Sithundu Hills, KwaDabeka and Ntuzuma Township’s D Section.”
Elated new homeowners were thrilled to have the title deeds in their hands and said they felt a sense of relief knowing that they now have a permanent roof over their heads. They expressed that it felt wonderful to finally have their own home. It was a proud day for them after almost 30 years – they said they felt as if their patience was finally rewarded.
