Three suspects wanted in connection with a series of murders including the 2023 killing of a police sergeant, were shot and fatally wounded in a shootout with police in the Congo area of Inanda.
A co-ordinated operation, involving members from the Provincial DPCI Tracking Team, DPCI Anti Gang Unit, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Tactical Response Team, Pietermaritzburg K9 unit, Inanda Task Team, and private security personnel, acted on intelligence regarding the suspects’ location.
The suspects had been under police surveillance for a considerable period.
Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said upon arriving at a house on Nombonjani Mtshali Road, the multidisciplinary team encountered four suspects who immediately opened fire.
“A gunfight ensued, resulting in three suspects sustaining fatal gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene. One suspect managed to escape into the darkness, and a manhunt is currently under way to apprehend him,” said Colonel Netshiunda.
“The deceased suspects have been linked to the murder of a police sergeant from the KwaMashu Tracking Team, who was disarmed and fatally shot with his service firearm in June 2023. Additionally, the suspects were connected to a double murder in Inanda in January 2024, and two other murders in the same area, registered in 2021 and 2023,” he said.
