The Railway Barracks Shree Emperumal Temple is set to open a cow sanctuary, known as a goshala, in tribute to the Hindu tradition of reverence for the cow, or gomatha.
Thaniga Moodley, a representative of the temple, said the goshala will provide devotees with a unique opportunity to connect with the cows, that are seen as revered beings in Hinduism.
The sanctuary will allow worshippers to nurture, feed, and even cuddle the cows, fostering a deeper spiritual experience.
Guruparan Gurukkal, the resident priest of the Railway Barracks Shree Emperumal Temple, shared the significance of the sanctuary.
“The cow sanctuary will serve as a place of worship. Devotees will come to honour the cow goddess, seeking blessings and hoping to overcome the challenges in their lives.”
Initially, the sanctuary will house two cows, and all necessary veterinary checks and protocols have been meticulously followed to ensure the animals’ well-being.
As the temple approaches its centennial celebration, the opening of the goshala on September 7 symbolizes a renewed commitment to preserving ancient traditions and nurturing a sense of community within the temple’s congregation.
“This sacred space is expected to become a cherished addition to the temple grounds, offering a place of peace and spiritual connection for all who visit,” said Gurukkal.
Recent years have seen the establishment of several goshalas in different parts of KwaZulu-Natal including those in Thornville (near Pietermaritzburg), La Mercy and Verulam.
