Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane has issued a warning to young people about the risks of excessive partying and unsafe sex during the festive season.
Ms Simelane emphasised the need for caution, highlighting the potential consequences of irresponsible behaviour such as unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Speaking at a community outreach programme in Hlathikhulu near Wembezi, she urged young people to enjoy the holiday season responsibly.
She said there was usually a surge in unprotected sex during the December holidays as September (nine months later) was the busiest time in hospital maternity wards.
A change in behaviour was needed to avoid unplanned pregnancies and their life-changing consequences, she said.
“As a result, many people end up with babies they had not planned for, who get given names like “Khisimusi” (Christmas). Therefore, we must look after ourselves. If you over-drink, you might wake up from a bed that you don’t know, with serious, life-changing consequences.“
Ms Simelane said male and female condoms and a range of contraceptives were freely available at state health facilities.
