Tributes have been streaming in for Gauteng businessman Sphamandla Mabonga who died following a shooting incident at Solo restaurant in Sandton on Thursday night.
Mabonga's two bodyguards died on the scene, while the businessman died later in the hospital.
National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) General Fannie Masemola confirmed that Mabonga was killed in the shooting on Friday afternoon.
Speaking about Thursday night's shooting, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said it was reported that a man with a firearm wanted to enter a restaurant, which has a no firearm policy, and that is when the altercation started, leading to a shooting between the man's bodyguards and security.
"Two of the bodyguards were declared dead on scene while five victims (the man, two patrons, a CPF member and a security guard) were taken to the hospital with gunshot injuries."
"The man who allegedly wanted to enter the restaurant succumbed to his injuries at the hospital."
Police also confirmed that the victim was arrested for another shooting incident also in Sandton in January 2024.
A case of murder and attempted murder are being investigated.
