On Sunday (October 29) the men and women who died in the struggle for freedom will be remembered. The city will host an event for the many who fought for freedom at the Siyabakhumbula (meaning we remember you) Memorial Day, at Umgababa Resort.
More than 20 000 people died in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Siyabakhumbula Memorial Day event is held annually to honour those who lost their lives in political violence in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in the 1990s.
The Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities in the Presidency, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, will deliver the keynote address. The minister will be accompanied by key dignitaries from the KZN provincial government and from eThekwini.
Traditional leadership, and family members of the victims will also attend the event. The event will commence with a wreath laying ceremony at the local memorial site by the members of Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) and members of families that lost their loved ones during this period.
eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said: “The commemoration of this day is important lest we forget about the lives lost in pursuit of freedom.”
