KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube expressed her condolences on the passing of anti-apartheid activist Aziz Pahad, a former Member of Parliament and deputy minister of International Relations, who served from 1994 to 2008.
Mr Pahad, aged 82, died on Wednesdsay September 27.
He left a lasting impact on the struggle for freedom in South Africa, said Ms Dube-Ncube, who also acknowledged his contributions as a freedom fighter, a dedicated public servant, and a close friend to many.
“It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I, on behalf of the people of KwaZulu-Natal, pay tribute to the late Aziz Pahad, a true hero of the South African struggle for freedom, who passed away on Wednesday. His death leaves an indelible void in our nation’s history and in our hearts,” she said.
She described Mr Pahad as a luminary in the fight against apartheid, emphasising his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and freedom.
“As a fearless activist and a prominent member of the African National Congress (ANC), Pahad played a pivotal role in South Africa’s liberation,” she said.
Ms Dube-Ncube also highlighted Mr Pahad’s extensive contributions as a diplomat and statesman, who had represented South Africa on the international stage with distinction. His diplomatic efforts were instrumental in garnering global support for the anti-apartheid cause, she said, adding that Mr Pahad well-known for his vocal opposition to the United States’ invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Mr Pahad’s tireless efforts towards building a democratic and inclusive society, said Ms Dube-Ncube, have left an indomitable mark on the nation’s history.
“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate his incredible life. Let us draw strength from his example and recommit ourselves to the principles of justice, equality, and unity that he so fervently upheld. In this challenging moment, let us remember his enduring spirit and honour his memory by continuing the work of building a South Africa that he, and so many others, fought for and dreamed of,” said Ms Dube-Ncube.
