A police officer was killed after gunmen stormed two jewellery stores at the Pavilion Shopping Centre on Sunday evening.
Two other people were injured in the incident, including a pregnant woman, who had to be treated at the scene.
Emergency services personnel said they responded to the shooting at about 5:45pm.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said when they arrived, they found two separate active crime scenes.
“The first was at the robots before the mall where a police member was shot. He was in a critical condition and rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, due to his injuries, he passed away a short while later.
“The second scene was inside the mall at two popular jewellery stores. ALS Paramedics treated and transported two females, one pregnant, who were assaulted during the alleged robbery. Both patients were stabilized on scene by advanced life support paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required,” Mr Jamieson said.
He said details of what had led to the shooting were unknown at that stage and police were investigating.
Shoppers at the mall were caught unaware and were terrified when they heard gunshots.
Eureka Maharaj, who was shopping at the mall, said she was not immediately aware of what was going on.
“I was in a shop and the security guards just mobilised and rolled the shutter doors down while we were in the shop. We were told there was a robbery in progress and the doors were being closed for our protection.
“We didn’t hear anything further thereafter but could hear gunshots. It felt like an eternity before we were eventually let out of the shop. It was absolute madness and mayhem as everyone rushed to get out of the mall. We didn’t know at that stage that the road ahead was closed due to the shooting of a police officer. We were literally sitting in traffic trying to get out of the mall for more than an hour and a half. It was horrific because we did not know what was actually going or and whether we were going to be attacked again,” said Ms Maharaj.
