A police constable was killed when she was hit by a truck that ploughed into an accident scene on the M7 Durban-bound near the N2 on Wednesday January 18.
Constable Nozipho Zuma, 30, stationed at the Bellair Police Station had been attending to the first accident when she was struck by the second truck.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesman Gareth Jamieson said shortly after stabilising and transporting two patients to hospital from the initial accident scene, they received numerous calls for assistance for a secondary accident that had occurred at the same location.
“On arrival paramedics found total carnage after a truck had somehow lost control while emergency personal were preparing to recover the truck and ploughed into the first scene.
“The second truck ploughed into two police vehicles, two trucks and two cars before the truck left the roadway coming to rest down the embankment. Three people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe and were stabilised on the scene by advanced life support paramedics before they were transported to a nearby Durban Hospital. The police officer, who was on duty at the scene, was struck by the truck and declared dead on the scene,” said Mr Jamieson.
Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said they were investigating.
