The Mediterrean Shipping Company (MSC) has launched a ship hospital in Southern Africa that will provide free surgery and training to the people in those areas.
MSC Group, MSC Foundation, and the charity Mercy Ships International are preparing for the construction of a hospital ship that will travel across Africa and provide free surgery and training to people.
MSC Group and MSC Foundation chairperson Captain Gianluigi Aponte said he spent part of his childhood “in the shipping industry in the Horn of Africa” and, consequently, it is a region close to his heart.
“I truly look forward to seeing this new ship set sail to help more communities across Africa,” he said.
According to a press release, “the new ship will feature living spaces to accommodate approximately 600 crew members and guests on board.”
The hospital “will span two decks and 7 000 square meters, featuring six operating rooms, a fully equipped laboratory, and state-of-the-art training spaces such as a simulation lab.”
Mercy Ships is an organisation that operates hospital ships that deliver free surgeries and other healthcare services to those who find safe medical care inaccessible. Mercy Ships also provides training to local healthcare practitioners to provide a long-lasting change to the places they visit.
