In a ground-breaking move aimed at empowering the unemployed, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube use d her State of the Province address to announce a project which would provide support for 4000 unemployed people to get their learner and driver’s licences.
Ms Dube-Ncube said the Thuthuka Driver Training Programme was designed to upskill and equip individuals for meaningful employment opportunities and that selected beneficiaries, spanning all districts in the province, would receive financial backing from the provincial government to obtain both learner and driver’s licenses.
This program aligns with the government’s overarching campaign, S’thesha Waya Waya, which seeks to create jobs and open doors for the unemployed population.
The announcement was met with excitement at the Exhibition Centre in Durban, where Premier Dube-Ncube, alongside the MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, handed out support for learners’ and drivers’ licenses to the 4000 beneficiaries.
“This initiative stands as a testament to our commitment to addressing unemployment challenges and uplifting the lives of its citizens. Being able to drive and have a licence empowers so many people in so many different ways,” said Ms Dube-Ncube at the handing-over ceremony.
