A suspect linked to the murders of a Durban mother and daughter in December last year was shot dead by police in Mount Edgecombe in the early hours of Wednesday.
Magma Investigations and Security boss, Shaheen Suleiman, said the man had allegedly shot at officers while trying to make a getaway, before crashing his car in the vicinity of Mount Edgecombe.
Mr Suleiman said the operation was conducted by the DPCI provincial tracking team, anti-gang unit, PMB K9, TRT, Metro Police ORS, Magma Security and Investigations, Fidelity SIU and Hawks Protection Services.
Police Minister Bheki Cele said this intervention by the police was as part of on-going efforts to flush out criminality through their aggressive policing intervention, Operation Shanela.
He said the operation has resulted in the arrests of more than 500 000 suspects.
“The Police Ministry is turning its focus on improving community policing through fostering relations between communities and the police. The community engagements will focus on addressing serious and violent crimes impacting these communities as well as the police’s responses to these crimes,” the minister said in a statement.
He, together with the management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) led by National Commissioner Fannie Masemola will lead a series of community Izimbizo in some of the country’s high crime areas. On Thursday, they will be visiting Mariannhill where nine suspects, who held a reign of terror against the residents were shot and killed by police.
The minister and other members would go on a walkabout at the KwaMamdekazi taxi rank while the imbizo would be held at the Dassenhoek Community Hall.
