The eThekwini Municipality has successfully completed the repair and upgrade of its inner city closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, meeting its target of full operational status before the festive season, as announced three weeks ago.
In a recent statement, the municipality highlighted the completion of the process, which began in September and aimed to enhance safety measures for the influx of holidaymakers during the festive season.
The repair and upgrade efforts were finalised by November 30, as promised by eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.
Mr Kaunda expressed satisfaction with the work undertaken, emphasising that all CCTV cameras in the city centre were now operational. The heightened surveillance, combined with increased law enforcement visibility, is expected to contribute to a reduction in criminal activities.
The technological improvements to the surveillance cameras are not only geared towards enhancing safety but also extend to improving traffic flow management, emergency response times, and the overall deployment of critical municipal resources.
Looking ahead, the municipality plans to expand the CCTV camera coverage to residential areas, including townships and suburbs.
Mr Kaunda called on communities to collaborate with the City and law enforcement agencies in the on-going effort to combat crime.
Deputy mayor Zandile Myeni, along with the municipality’s Security and Emergency Committee, conducted an oversight visit last month to assess the project’s progress.
The delegation inspected the repaired cameras in the city centre and expressed satisfaction with the advancements.
