Motorists were advised to exercise caution today (Monday October 30) due to heavy snowfall along the N3 Van Reenen’s Pass.
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) has reported rain, sleet, and significant snowfall in the stretch between Van Reenen’s Pass and Warden.
There has also been heavy snowfall in Underberg, Ladysmith and Newcastle.
These adverse weather conditions are causing reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions.
In response to the situation, N3TC is urging motorists to postpone their trips to the affected area if possible. Thania Dhoogra, the operations manager at N3TC, has emphasised the potential dangers posed by these conditions.
“These conditions may cause roads to become slippery and dangerous,” she said. “Drivers are requested to adapt their driving behaviour to match the current road and weather conditions. This includes reducing your travelling speed, increasing following distances, and keeping your vehicle’s headlights on, especially when visibility is poor or the roads are wet.”
Ms Dhoogra has also advised against unnecessary overtaking and stressed the importance of proceeding only when it is safe to do so. She further recommended that drivers should only make stops at designated parking areas.
Additionally, road users are advised to be prepared for potential traffic congestion and delays. Ms Dhoogra suggests keeping essential emergency supplies in your vehicle, such as warm clothing, blankets, water, food, medication, a cell phone with its charger, and a flashlight. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of motorists as they navigate the challenging conditions in the affected area.
