A brutal home invasion in Cornubia left a mother dead and her two young children traumatised after intruders held them at gunpoint before shooting their mother.
Reaction Unit South Africa’s (RUSA) Mr Prem Balram said they responded to an emergency call out from a neighbour who heard gunshots last Wednesday afternoon.
“Upon arrival, officers interviewed the victim’s 16-year-old daughter, who had made the harrowing discovery. The young girl explained that she had just returned from school and was handed the house key by her mother, who was preparing to enter the bathroom.
“As the girl unlocked the door, two unknown men entered the home with her. Brandishing firearms, one of the men led her and her one-year-old brother upstairs, warning her to remain silent to avoid alerting her mother. While one suspect stayed with the children, the other remained downstairs. Moments later, the girl heard two gunshots. The men quickly fled, leaving her in shock. She then rushed downstairs, where she found her mother unresponsive, lying on the bathroom floor with a gunshot wound to her head,” said Mr Balram.
Paramedics on the scene pronounced the woman dead.
“We had to remove the children from the scene and place them in the care of the police and social workers. The community is shocked by this senseless incident,” said Mr Balram.
Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said they were investigating the incident.
