Exciting new attractions are set to transform the city’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Originally built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the stadium is undergoing significant upgrades that promise to make it a must-visit attraction in Durban.
New offerings such as a sky car, a sea-facing bungee jump, a high-tech swing, and a revamped viewing platform are part of the exciting developments.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, Mayor Cyril Xaba said the improvements and attractions were necessary.
“We want to ensure the stadium remains one of the best sporting facilities in the country,” Mr Xaba said.
He explained that the council has approved R236 million for renovations, with a focus on maintaining the stadium’s structural integrity and enhancing its appeal for tourists and locals alike.
“The stadium, which has been a part of Durban’s skyline for 15 years, needed rehabilitation to stay relevant, attractive, and compliant,” Mr Xaba added.
“These upgrades will not only ensure its commercial viability but will also enhance the safety of residents and visitors.”
Here’s what visitors can look forward to:
Arch and Bowl Lighting: New colour-themed lighting options, including reinstated arch lighting for a more vibrant atmosphere.
Sky Car: A brand-new, high-spec cabin offering a smoother, longer ride and enhanced user experience. The Sky Car will now be accessible to disabled persons and able to operate in higher winds, increasing availability.
Viewing Platform: Visitors will enjoy a 60% increase in floor area, cantilevered glass floors for an “Air Walk” experience, and dramatic views of the city from this high-spec platform.
Big Swing & Zip Line: Adventurous visitors can experience an improved big swing with better access and a thrilling sea-facing bungee jump option. A new zip line will also provide an exhilarating ride that ends at People’s Park.
Compression Ring Walk: This new feature will offer breathtaking views of Durban’s skyline and the Indian Ocean.
“With its cutting-edge refurbishments and enhanced visitor experiences, Moses Mabhida Stadium is set to solidify its status as a premier destination in Durban. Whether for sports events or thrilling activities, the stadium will continue to be a landmark of adventure and entertainment for years to come,” said Xaba.
