In a tragic conclusion to a two-week search, the body of 69-year-old missing Esenembe farmer Russell Lexton Cromhout was discovered on Saturday in a sugarcane field near his home.
Mr Cromhout had been missing since his house was ransacked and car stolen.
Umhlali police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to Mr Cromhout’s murder, house robbery, and theft. The Umhlali Serious and Violent Crime Unit took over the investigation, apprehending the first suspect at a grocery store in Upper Tongaat on Saturday. The suspect was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition belonging to Mr Cromhout.
Further investigations led to the arrest of a second suspect, who was found with Mr Cromhout’s vehicle and household items allegedly stolen during the robbery. The intensive probe ultimately led authorities to a sugarcane farm in the Waterfall area, where Mr Cromhout’s body was recovered.
The suspects are believed to be paroled prisoners.
Mr Cromhout’s son, Tyron, said the family was devastated over their loss.
“I last saw and heard from my father two weeks ago when we were celebrating his 69th birthday at the farm. I don’t think that all of this has sunk in … that he is gone. I have been told that it is him, but I want to see it for myself. I think I deserve that bit of closure,” said Tyron. He said their family would be returning to the farm this week.
Tyron described his father as a free-spirited person who “just loved having fun.” Reflecting on his father’s passion for plants, he said, “My dad loved plants. Ask him about any plant, he would know everything about it. He lived each day to its fullest and I will miss him dearly.”
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspects have been charged with murder, housebreaking and theft, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen property. “Initial investigations have revealed that the two suspects were out on parole. They are expected to appear in court soon,” said Colonel Netshiunda.
