The community of Mbonambi Secondary School in KwaMbonambi, north of Durban, is in mourning after the tragic death of a matric pupil, who was fatally struck by a train on Saturday evening.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, in a statement, confirmed that the South African Police Services and a forensic team responded to the scene, where they retrieved the body for identification purposes.
To support the grieving pupils and staff at the school, officials from the King Cetshwayo District visited the school on Sunday. The district offered trauma and counselling services to help pupils cope with the loss.
Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi explained that further support would continue throughout the matric examinations, as the Department’s Special Needs Services will be available to assist any pupils facing trauma or anxiety during this challenging time.
Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka expressed his condolences to the family, students, and staff of Mbonambi Secondary School, describing the department’s shock and sadness over the loss.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, students, and staff,” said Mr Hlomuka. “This is a tragic loss, especially during the third week of the National Senior Certificate Examinations.”
Mr Hlomuka also encouraged pupils across the province to prioritise safety and take all necessary precautions.
