Mayor Cyril Xaba has commended the progress that has been made in the upgrading and restoration of the Northern Wastewater Treatment Works in Sea Cow Lake, which suffered extensive damage during the floods.
He led a delegation of executive committee members and senior municipal officials during a site inspection at the treatment works, which are being repaired at a cost of R500 million.
The plant forms part of the 10 wastewater treatment works the municipality is upgrading in collaboration with uMngeni/uThukela Water.
After the site inspection, the mayor convened the weekly water and sanitation meeting. The meeting aims to resolve water and sanitation challenges in eThekwini and to track progress on projects that are currently under way.
The meeting was joined by Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister Issac Seitlholo who commended the city leadership for engaging weekly on water and sanitation issues.
“Reflecting on the progress the city has made in upgrading the sanitation infrastructure, we are pleased that great strides are being made as evidenced by the water quality of our beaches,” the Mayor said. “Currently, out of 23 swimming beaches, only one is closed and we have upgraded our treatment works and pump stations, particularly along the coastal line. This would be maintained until the festive season and beyond.”
