Durban has embraced Ramadaan with mass iftar events on the beachfront.
This week marks the beginning of Ramadaan, the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar, observed by over a billion Muslims worldwide. The month is dedicated to fasting from dawn until dusk, spiritual growth, and acts of charity, aiming to foster a closer connection to Allah (God) and a spirit of compassion.
In the spirit of communal harmony and to celebrate Ramadaan, Durban resident Zakiah Ebrahim has organised two significant iftar gatherings, set to take place on the scenic Durban beachfront on the evenings of Saturday March 16 and Saturday March 23. Iftar, the meal with which Muslims end their daily fast at sunset, is a time of joy and reflection.
Ms Ebrahim’s initiative welcomes individuals from all religious backgrounds to join in these communal meals, promoting an atmosphere of unity and understanding.
“The mass iftars we’ve been hosting for the past eight years on the Durban beachfront have seen increasing participation. Originating from the idea of a mass iftar in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap, our events are open to everyone, aiming to illuminate the true essence of Ramadaan while bridging community gaps,” Ms Ebrahim explained.
The first of these beachfront Ifthars catered to 600 attendees, but the number has since swelled to nearly 3 000, underscoring the growing appeal and significance of these gatherings.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own meals to share, fostering a sense of community and shared humanity. “It’s a family-oriented event, with people encouraged to bring picnic baskets and mats, sharing meals and stories,” Ms Ebrahim added, highlighting the event’s warm, inclusive atmosphere.
Ms Ebrahim extended her gratitude to the generous donors providing meals for the events and noted that volunteers would assist on the day to ensure the gatherings run smoothly. The iftars will be held on the grassy area next to Bilal’s restaurant, inviting the community to come together in a beautiful setting.
