In a major breakthrough, KwaZulu-Natal police recovered stolen copper cables valued at approximately R20 million during a raid at a scrapyard in Queensburgh on Wednesday.
The operation followed intelligence gathered on Tuesday, that indicated alleged illegal activities at the scrapyard on Martin Drive. A swift and well-coordinated plan was set in motion by the Public Order Policing Unit, with support from the Hawks.
SAPS spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the raid, executed early Wednesday morning, uncovered a large haul of copper cables.
“Officials from the eThekwini Municipality have confirmed that the bulk of the recovered material belongs to the municipality, highlighting the extent of theft affecting essential services in the region,” said Col Netshiunda.
He said a 59-year-old man, who identified himself as the scrapyard manager, had been taken into custody. The man is expected to appear in court soon.
“This operation is seen as a significant step in curbing cable theft, which continues to have a detrimental impact on infrastructure in the province,” said Colonel Netshiunda.
