KwaZulu-Natal is gearing up to transition to a new “ZN” number plate system by December 1.
This move comes after the province’s executive council reviewed a presentation from the Department of Transport concerning the proposed number plate system for the province on Wednesday.
One of the key drivers behind this shift is the depletion of available combinations under the current system, which uses three alphabets. Plates bearing combinations like NRB, NPN, and NPS have been exhausted, necessitating the adoption of a new format.
To facilitate a smooth transition, motorists in KwaZulu-Natal will have two years to switch from their current number plates to the new “ZN” system. This extended period aims to minimise any undue financial burdens on vehicle owners and ensures the involvement of local manufacturers in the process.
While the executive council supports the change, it places a strong emphasis on keeping the transition as financially feasible as possible for the public. The council has tasked MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, with expediting public consultations by issuing government gazettes. Additionally, a comprehensive communication campaign will be launched to inform motorists about the benefits of this change.
This transition is expected to contribute significantly to the fight against crime in the province and a significant step toward a more efficient and secure vehicle identification system in the province.
