Five gun-toting gang members who were seen firing shots randomly in the air in a trending video have been arrested.
The suspects, in the video, are seen firing shots randomly in the air at the KwaMashu hostel.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspects were arrested earlier this week and appeared at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The suspects, aged between 24 and 43, will be back in the dock on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
“On Friday last week, a suspect believed to be one of the gang members was shot and fatally wounded in a shootout with police in Inanda and was found in possession of a firearm.
“Police operations continued and between Monday night and Tuesday morning, five more suspects were arrested along the Siyanda Main Road where police had responded to reports of an active armed robbery.
“Three firearms and a hijacked vehicle were found in their possession. One of them fired shots at the police but was overpowered and arrested,” said Netshiunda.
He said the suspects were linked to a series of murders, hijackings, and robberies along the Dumisani Makhaye Highway, KwaMashu, Inanda, Ntuzuma and the nearby townships.
Police are appealing to anyone who might have been a victim of the suspects to come forward.
A search for more suspects is underway.
