Franki Smit is making history in her family, as the first university graduate.
Ms Smit, 24, from Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, is set to graduate Cum Laude for her Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 spring graduation at the Durban Exhibition Centre on Thursday, September 19.
Ms Smit said she always wanted to pursue a practical profession within the medical field and worked hard to get into the programme. Her dream finally came true as she is now working in the medical field at Stellenbosch Orthopaedics. She said that her goal is to have her own orthotist practice one day.
“I align myself with all of DUT ENVISION2030 living values and principles, but honesty and transparency resonate with me the most. I think that honesty and open communication is vital for building trust and creating a healthy and productive atmosphere in every area of life,” she said.
“My family is incredibly proud of my achievements, particularly since I am the first member of the family to attain this level of academic success. Before I set out my my academic journey I understood the full scope of what I was getting into, I wanted to genuinely enjoy what I was studying.”
Ms Smith is also a national-level artistic gymnast and since retiring from competitive gymnastics, she has discovered a new passion for kite surfing. She said she enjoys playing sports in her free time and believes that sports help her clear her mind and make her feel more focused.
“I am grateful to my close friends, who have been a constant source of strength and encouragement. Through thick and thin, they have stood by me, proving that no one needs to face challenges alone. I believe that building a supportive community is important because when individuals work together towards a common goal, they can achieve far more than they could alone,” said Ms Smit.
