The Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently revealed comprehensive updates on the university’s multi-million rand infrastructure development projects.
Thabani Mhlongo, the Senior Director of Real Estate Management at DUT said despite facing setbacks, including delays caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and technical issues on-site, the projects were now progressing towards completion.
The primary focus of these infrastructure initiatives was to enhance the educational experience for DUT students and establish world-class facilities. Two major projects are currently under way, one at the Steve Biko campus in Durban and the other at the Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg.
The Steve Biko campus project encompasses the construction of a student centre, a multi-purpose hall, and a parkade. The Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg is witnessing the development of a science building and lecture venues. Additionally, a significant project involves the construction of five diverse building facilities between the Steve Biko and Ritson campuses to cater to the expanding needs of the university community. The administration building and innovation hub have been designed to meet green building standards, underscoring DUT’s commitment to sustainability.
In addressing the challenges encountered during the project’s execution, Mhlongo emphasized DUT’s implementation of robust stakeholder management strategies. The university prioritizes local stakeholders’ involvement, fostering community participation in the construction process. Moreover, these projects serve as valuable platforms for skills development, offering students practical experience and opportunities for professional growth.
“Despite facing delays attributed to Covid-19 and on-site technical issues, we are happy to say that progress is well under way. Currently, the focus is on internal finishes. This marks a significant milestone in the construction process. Local subcontractors play a pivotal role, contributing to the projects and creating employment opportunities within the community. We have also got the students involved which helps the with practical experience, thereby enriching their education and professional skills,” said Mr Mhlongo.
He is expecting to hand-over the completed projects as soon as the contractors finalise their finishing touches.
