KwaZulu Natal high school pupils maintained their domination of the annual Varsity College National High Schools Quiz with a top and third placing against nearly 300 pupils from 250 schools in this year’s competition.
First place went to Grade 11 pupil Mohammed Sayfullah Khan from Orient Islamic School in Durban, while Johara Naidoo from Ashton International College in Ballito claimed third place behind Blessing Nyatsanza from Walmer High School in Gqebera.
Despite a modest entry of 41, seven of the Grande Finale quizzers hailed from KZN.
Last year, the Pietermaritzburg Varsity College campus basked in the glory of winner, Michael Brown from Grace College in Hilton.
Khan’s triumph won him and his school each R10 000 and R5 000 for his English teacher Rashida Asmal who helped him to prepare.
The quiz on general knowledge across several subjects saw Khan also placed first in the KZN finals at the Westville campus.
