Since striking a partnership with the retail giant, Shoprite Group, just over a year ago, TMK Foods, a family-owned enterprise based in Durban, has witnessed remarkable growth. Initially stocking their renowned Mediterranean Kitchen brand in five Checkers stores across KwaZulu-Natal, TMK Foods now boasts placement in 15 outlets, marking a significant expansion in their market presence.
Established in 2010 by former restaurateur Dino Constantinou, TMK Foods emerged from humble beginnings, rooted in Mr Constantinou’s passion for Mediterranean cuisine. From crafting a range of delectable dips, pestos, and meze in his home kitchen, the business gradually outgrew its domestic confines, necessitating a move to a small-scale factory.
In 2018, Mr Constantinou’s sons, Alex, Michael, and Angelo, infused their expertise into the family business, catalysing further expansion initiatives. Angelo Constantinou recounts the pivotal moment when TMK Foods caught the attention of Shoprite Group through their small supplier development programme. “Receiving a call from the retailer was beyond exciting,” he said.
Sales figures reflect TMK Foods’ burgeoning popularity, with monthly units sold escalating from a modest few hundred to thousands. The company, now operating from a factory, has expanded its workforce, employing nine additional individuals while ensuring the retention of its homemade and authentic flavour profile.
Angelo Constantinou expressed his gratitude for the opportunity provided by Shoprite Group. “Our family business now has a fighting chance in an economy that is ever so difficult to trade in,” he said.
The company was shortlisted for the Shoprite Group’s 2023 Supplier of the Year Awards in the SMME category. Maude Modise, head of Shoprite Next Capital, praised TMK Foods’ contribution to fostering a diverse business ecosystem, highlighting the significance of such collaborations in driving enterprise growth.
