Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla was all smiles when she appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 30.
She was charged in connection with the unrest and public violence that occurred in July 2021, in various parts of South Africa.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla, 42, faces charges of Incitement to Commit Terrorism, and two counts of Incitement to commit Public Violence, said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), national spokesman, Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga.
“The state is alleging that during the period of June 29 to July 17, 2021 in various places within the Republic of South Africa, she unlawfully and intentionally incited others to commit terrorism using social media posts,” said Advocate Mhaga.
“The state is further alleging that she incited, instigated, or procured other persons known and unknown to the state to unlawfully assemble with common intent to forcibly disturb the public peace and invade the rights of other persons.”
In addition, Advocate Mhaga said the state alleges that she unlawfully and intentionally spoke words or published messages in circumstances, that it might reasonably be expected that the natural and probable consequence of her speech would be the commission of public violence.
“In court, Ms Zuma-Sambudla was released on warning. The state served the defence with an indictment, and the matter will be transferred to the Durban High Court. The case returns to court on March 20,” said Advocate Mhaga.
