Eight armed suspects who bombed an empty ATM and shot two minibus operators in Bolobedu South, Limpopo, are still at large as police intensify their manhunt following the early morning attack on Friday, March 7.
Despite their violent assault, the suspects fled empty-handed as the targeted ATM contained no cash.
Police spokesperson Luietenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng said that eight armed suspects arrived at the business premises at around 4am and bombed an ATM located between shops near a taxi rank.
As they were committing the crime, two minibus operators, aged 29 and 41, unknowingly arrived at the scene to pick up passengers. The suspects opened fire on them, injuring both men.
“The minibus operators sustained injuries and were later transported to a local hospital to receive medical treatment. Both are in stable condition," said Thakeng .
Despite the violent attack, investigations later revealed that the ATM had no money. The suspects fled the scene empty-handed in a Toyota Quantum minibus with an unknown registration number.
"The minibuses were damaged during the shooting incident and police found several spent cartridges, one round of ammunition and one projectile at the scene of crime," Thakeng said.
A manhunt is underway to track down the unknown suspects.
Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
