The body of an unidentified woman was found in an abandoned home in Ireland Street, Verulam on Tuesday morning.
Reaction Unit South Africa’s Prem Balram said a scrap collector made the discovery just after 8am when he was doing his rounds of collecting scrap items.
“The scrap collector flagged down one of our members to inform them of his discovery. Our members went to the house basement where the woman was found. Our medics attended to her but she showed no signs of life and was declared dead at the scene. Circumstances leading up to her death have not been established at this stage,” said Mr Balram.
He said the woman, together with several other people, was known to be squatting in the abandoned property.
“This property is a hang-out for many drug addicts in the area. They use heroin here and other substances. Some of the addicts even live here and all kinds of things take place here,” said Mr Balram.
He said they had appealed to the owners of the property to take measures to ensure there are no squatters but to no avail.
Police are investigating the cause of the woman’s death.
