Three wanted suspects, believed to be notorious gangsters, were gunned during the early hours of Wednesday morning in La Mercy.
Several police units, together with private security companies, acting on information received, had surrounded a house in the area.
KZN police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said when the suspects realised they had been surrounded, they opened fire on the police and a shoot-out ensued, resulting in the three suspects being shot dead.
“Police received intelligence that a group involved in serious crimes including murders committed in the Inanda area were hiding at the Lungelani Informal Settlement in La Mercy.
“A team comprising various police disciplines including members of the Hawks descended on the location. Realising that they were surrounded, the suspects opened fire at the police and a shootout ensued. Three suspects were fatally wounded during the shootout and two pistols were found in the possession of the suspects,” said Brigadier Naicker.
